NABWMT Board of Directors
Tribute to ABilly S. Jones-Hennin

We honor the man who has in many ways changed the course of history. ABilly S. Jones-Hennin passed on January 19, 2024. Passionate and driven, ABilly was someone who dedicated his life to fight against segregation, racism, and for LGBT+ rights. He was our second NABWMT Black Co-Chair from 1983-1984 and was passionate about our organization for over 40 years.

ABilly pushed boundaries and effected change by having a national conversation and pushing boundaries so all could be seen, recognized, and loved. ABilly broke barriers so that we wouldn’t live in shame. His heroic efforts included actively participating in demonstrations and rallies and writing articles. He spoke often and reverently through numerous interviews and speeches. ABilly devoted his life over several decades by taking on countless leadership roles within the Black, people of color, and LGBTQ movements. His lasting commitment was as co-founder of the first national African American gay and lesbian advocacy group called the National Coalition of Black Gays. He worked in his professional and personal life to support women’s issues and rights. He educated and pushed public officials to act on equitable healthcare, housing, and employment. He battled so that we would have the right to be open in our relationships and our rights to marriage.

ABilly S. Jones-Hennin’s legacy lives through us and he will continue to inspire future generations. While we are profoundly sad, we also celebrate his life, and the man who stood alongside us while changing the world. He allowed us to live life with an abundance of courage and love. ABilly saw the light in each of us and we are forever grateful for his unwavering dedication to promoting peace and justice through courage, sacrifice, and compassion.
